Knee Pain

Knee Pain / Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

Patellofemoral pain syndrome is a common knee issue affecting both athletes and non-athletes. This condition causes discomfort at the front (anterior) of the knee, leading to a variety of symptoms.

  • If you experience aching in the front of your knee, occasional swelling, or a sensation of movement and creaking (often described as a "bag of peas" feeling), you may have patellofemoral pain syndrome. Pain is commonly felt after sitting for extended periods and can also refer to the inner part of the knee. This condition arises when the undersurface of the patella (kneecap) rubs against the groove of the femur, causing inflammation.

  • The pain can be exacerbated by activities such as walking upstairs or performing squats, where the patellofemoral joint is subjected to multiple times your body weight. For instance, walking transmits about half your body weight, running about 3-4 times, and exercises like squats can apply 7-8 times your body weight to the knee.

  • At The Hills Foot Clinic, we will thoroughly analyse your gait and work to restore and enhance your foot function. We may recommend orthotic therapy alongside other treatments such as taping, stretching, and massage therapy to address the issue effectively.

  • Our goal is to alleviate your knee pain and improve your overall function. With our expert care and tailored treatment plan, you can get back to your daily activities with greater comfort and ease.
